I probably didn’t have to warn my readers — they’ve gotten pretty savvy by now.
The horses are the military machines — the tanks, so to speak. They have to be in top form. Or at least before the battle; they can be run and starved to death after it all begins, just like the men.
Why do guys let this be done to them? And then they claim they’re smarter?
Nobody wants to have to deal with doctors in the military. They can be crazy, brutal, or sloppy. They can also be very good. You pays your money, you takes your choice.
It’s never good if the vet’s involved. We all know that.
You know it’s never good when the vet shows up.
Some of my readers actually caught that sick horse in the background. They smart!
The problem with peace, at least for the military, is ending up with a cadre that hasn’t seen combat. Only a few old guys like Gift may remember. Unfortunately, this isn’t usually a problem.
This is even worse for Stinz, who, as a half-horse of his type, is sickened by blood.
Gift’s got to take control fast and clean up the mess. He knows that later, nobody will be worrying about dead bodies. Believe it or not, this is a more controlled and civilized introduction to war deaths. It’s more like civilian death – just as brutal, but with more concern for people as humans, rather than simply comrades, which is very tribal.
