The sergeant isn’t necessarily KIND: he’s just doing his job. Kids who get sick or can’t be trained are one less soldier, and it’s not his place to get himself busted or replaced.
That first night in the barracks can be scary.

Those stupid shots HURT. It’s like being punched on a bone, really hard. It kind of focuses the mind, and makes us forget any other problems we might have at the moment, even snorting sergeants.

Well, that shut him up. Along with lice, that may be one of the reasons for those haircut — give the poor sergeant a breather from all these kids, caroming off each other like billiard balls.
